Devils in the Details 9/11/2013: Beginning of Camp Edition

Devils and non-Devils links for 9/11/2013 for readers to go through as well as a place for any hockey-related discussion.

USA TODAY Sports

Here are several hockey links to get you through the day, both New Jersey Devils and non-Devils related:

Devils Links

Training camp has begun for the rookies and non-roster players. Here's the full roster, which includes only one player on a try-out deal: Windsor left winger Remy Giftopolous. Per Lou, he'll go back to juniors so the organization is just doing Windsor a solid by looking at the overage junior. [Fire & Ice]

Plenty of players want to use this camp with the goal of making the roster. That's the goal for Mattias Tedenby [Fire & Ice], Rod Pelley [Fire & Ice], and Reid Boucher [Fire & Ice]. Short of a brilliant preseason, I doubt any of those three will meet it on opening night.

Cam Janssen, though, just wants his reputation back. Funny, I didn't know he lost his rep for being a terrible hockey player that contributes nothing positive on the ice. But I've been known to misunderstand people before. [NJ.com]

Sarge fans rejoice! Sergei Brylin is now an official member of the organization in a full-time coaching role. He has been announced on Tuesday as an assistant for Albany. [Devils official site]

NHL14 is out featuring your favorite legendary goaltender on the cover. However, Devils fan and CNET writer Jeff Bakalar states that you may want to wait on the title if you're a regular of the series. I am not so some of this will be brand new to me. Still, this review says the game isn't all glitter and gold. [CNET]

Video: Scott Stevens was honored by the Canadian Association of New York for his achievements in hockey. MSG has video talking to many at the event from Lou to Peter DeBoer to Martin Brodeur to Stevens himself. [MSG]

Lastly and certainly not least: MSG has released the full TV schedule for the 2013-14 season. There are 13 games on MSG Plus 2 out of 75 total on the MSG family of networks. Only one preseason game will be on TV, the rest will likely be carried elsewhere. [MSG]

Non-Devils Links

The next great stats site is really coming together. It's called Extra Skater, it carries a ton of information in a smooth format. Here's the general page for the Devils but it's such a wonder to go through the data so seemlessly between situation. It even has game-by-game data. It's still a work-in-progress, but expect us to use this site plenty in the future. [Extra Skater]

Speaking of stats, Tyler Dellow delved into the meaning of Corsi% further. It's a glimpse at how this information may truly be used in the future. The glimpse focuses on Ben Eager for the moment, though. [mc79hockey]

The NHL is planning to create a Champions Cup, presumably for NHL teams to play against champion teams in Europe. This is a bad idea in my opinion. If the NHL teams win, then it's expected. If they lose, then it just makes the league - which is purpoted to have the best talent in the world - look worse for it. Champions League works in UEFA because the big teams in various leagues can hang with each other and millions want to see them battle it out. I don't think there is a similar desire for, say, the Blackhawks to face Dynamo Moscow. [CBS Sports]

Elliotte Friedman leads off his 30 Thoughts article about an important change in wording of Rule 48. [CBC]

Toronto paid Nazem Kadri in time for preseason. He'll be getting a two-year, $5.8 million deal. Now they still have to sign Cody Franson. Wonder if he'll take a cap hit of less than $2 million? [TSN]

The Flyers are trying out Dan Cleary and Hal Gill. [Flyers official website] That's not all that odd. What is odd is that apparently Dan Cleary was offered a three-year deal. [Puck Daddy] The Flyers are over the cap, but once that's resolved he'll be signed. Some tryout.

Miikka Kiprusoff retired from hockey. [Flames official website] Here's a reaction from Calgary supporter bookofloob. [Flames Nation]

Brad Boyes is trying out with the Panthers. Tim Thomas also got offered a try out, but he wants an actual contract on a team where he can play. [TSN]

Video: Boston Bruins management throwing Tyler Seguin under the bus rationalizing why has to go without mentioning his contract revealing why Tyler Seguin was traded. [Puck Daddy]

Hockey Prospectus 2013-14: Soon. (Disclosure: I contributed to this year's annual. Expect more shilling later.) [Hockey Prospectus]
