Katie Fitzgerald pulls a Brodeur to lead the Riveters to their first Isobel Cup.

This week we took a diversion into some non-NHL hockey in the Garden State as we watched the Metropolitan Riveters lock down their first Isobel Cup win against the Buffalo Beauts. It was a tightly fought game and the heroics of Katie Fitzgerald and Alexa Gruschow proved to be enough as the Riveters came out on top of an uncharacteristically physical and rough matchup for the women’s game. An earlier matchup between these two this season led to a combined 70 (!) penalty minutes so some scores were settled and the locals came out on top. Hats off to Jenny Ryan who had a whale of a game as well, no NWHL pun intended.

We’re going to keep it weird as it looks like the NHL is rumbling about potentially restarting the season. This week, we have another non-NHL game but it features someone very prominent in NHL history.

This is Manon Rheaume playing for the New Jersey Rockin’ Rollers of Roller Hockey International, the now-defunct professional roller hockey league of the 90s. We’ve got the back half of a game against the Buffalo Stampede and it’s a doozy:

We’ll take a look at what we can glean from this game but also look forward to bringing you news about the current NHL season as things develop. For now, enjoy some classic roller hockey shenanigans and dream of a time gone by where this was played professionally. I know we all miss it.

As always, thanks for listening and Let’s Go Devils!
