As the season inches closer, things are starting to move. Here are your links for today:

Two goals and two assists for Dawson Mercer in a lopsided game against the Germans, plus other updates from prospects at the World Juniors: [NHL (Saturday update)] [NHL (Sunday update)]
Patrick Moynihan is on the receiving end of a terrible hit:

A couple of ... interesting cap moves on Sunday:
The Blues have signed Mike Hoffman to a … PTO?
Mike Hoffman has signed a professional tryout contract with the Blues and will be in Training Camp when it begins on Jan. 3. https://t.co/5ScFoQcbUx #stlblues
— St. Louis Blues (@StLouisBlues) December 27, 2020
It appears what the Blues are doing is waiting until the start of the season to sign Hoffman, which would allow them to wait to put Tarasenko and Steen on Long-Term Injury Reserve, allowing them to maximize their LTIR money. This points to Hoffman joining the Blues. #stlblues

All things being equal, there’s a one-year contract coming for Hoffman closer to opening night once the Blues can use LTIR. https://t.co/JH1XKD4ayQ

And the Lightning acquire ... some cap flexibility:
We have traded Braydon Coburn, Cedric Paquette and our 2022 second-round pick to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for the rights to Marian Gaborik and Anders Nilsson. https://t.co/3qkfKXdnaM
— Tampa Bay Lightning (@TBLightning) December 28, 2020
In their media release, the @TBLightning announce Marian Gaborik and Anders Nilsson will not play this season. Both on LTIR, which will allow TB to be cap compliant

Earlier, the Sens made one deal you certainly could agree to:
#Sens have acquired Derek Stepan from #Coyotes in exchange for a 2021 2nd round pick (previously from #CBJ).

With Ilya Kovalchuk’s NHL career likely over, an interesting question comes to mind:

Ilya Kovalchuk is back to KHL. pic.twitter.com/jdhppr2XdR
Kovalchuk is a fun HHOF debate. Over 900 NHL games, around 500 in Russia once he’s done. He’d have 500 goals if he never left, maybe 600, which is an HHOF lock. Rocket-winner, Olympic gold (weird year), Gagarin Cup-winner.

It’s the Hockey Hall of Fame, not NHL Hall of Fame.
