Game Preview: Devils at Sabres

NHL: New Jersey Devils at Buffalo Sabres Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

The Matchup: New Jersey Devils (9-12-4) vs. the Buffalo Sabres (12-10-5)

The Time: 7:00 PM EST

The Broadcast: TV - MSG+

Changes Need to be Made: Last game was absolutely horrible to watch. Adding to the pain is the fact that the Devils lost to the Rangers, a hated rival. Offensive breakdowns, powerplay inefficiency, and a lack of urgency summed up that game, and the Devils system. It is evident that changes need to be made.

John Hynes needs to take some accountability, with many Devils fans are calling for his head. If no changes are made, Ray Shero is indicating to the fanbase that the results, or lack thereof, mean nothing. The fans’ voices mean nothing, because Ray Shero is a genius, who knows better than everyone else. To that I show the failures the Devils franchise has had in three of the past four seasons.

At this point, it may be smart to see what Simmonds, Vatanen and Hall can acquire. It’s a point in the season where the season, par a miraculous Blues-like comeback (which also required a coaching change), is lost. While I hate the idea of a rebuild, given that we’ve supposedly been rebuilding for a while now, it may be what’s best for this franchise. The Devils can’t simply sit and pray for Lafreniere like they did with Hughes.

Sabres to Know: Now to talk about a decent NHL team. Jack Eichel is carrying the Sabres, with 35 points (16 goals, 19 assists) through 27 games. Rookie sensation Victor Olofsson has 20 points through 27 games, while averaging 18 minutes of game time. Hey Hynes, it’s crazy what playing your future can do, am I right? Sam Reinhart has 20 points, and while Rasmus Dahlin has struggled more in his sophomore season, the defensive stud still has 16 points through 24 points, and is a threat offensively, if not defensively. The other Sabres player with 10+ goals is Jeff Skinner. After a ridiculous start last season, where Skinner scored 20 goals before December, he only has 10 goals and 5 assists on the season. Despite this, his shot is still insane, and he is a threat to score at any time.

Your Thoughts? I’m frustrated. I want change to occur, if only for the chance to show that it’s not the roster that needs to be deconstructed — but that’s just my two cents. What are your thoughts? Do we have a chance? Who will score? Let me know in the comments below, and welcome December.
