After months of speculation, hand-wringing and angst, the Senators finally traded Erik Karlsson … for this?

There’s no contract extension in place, so the Sharks have just one year of Karlsson guaranteed, but what a year it could be. It’s crazy to think that this time last year, Ottawa was getting ready to open camp coming off a surprise run to the Eastern Conference Final. And now this. [NHL] [TSN]

The Stars have signed Tyler Seguin to a long-term extension: eight years and $78.8 million. One would think Ray Shero would be pretty happy to sign Taylor Hall to that deal next summer. [NHL]

In a mild surprise, Auston Matthews was not named captain of the Leafs. Instead John Tavares, Patrick Marleau and Morgan Rielly will each be alternate captains this season. [NHL]

Aaaaaaand the Lou rule is gone!

Oliver Ekman-Larsson has been named captain of the Coyotes. [NHL]

And rounding out the captaincy news, Justin Williams has been named captain of the Hurricanes. [NHL]
