Last season the Devils went 1-3-0 against the Capitals, scoring eleven goals and giving up eighteen. The Capitals will be heading into life as defending champions without their cup winning head coach Barry Trotz. The Devils won their previous two home openers against the Anaheim Ducks in 2016 and Colorado Avalanche last season. This will be the 2nd time the Devils start their home schedule with the Capitals as visitors, winning 4-1 at the start of the 1985-86 season.
