Barry Trotz and the Washington Capitals have begun contract negotiations to bring Trotz back. Trotz says he wants to come back but says there are issues he needs to work out with general manager Brian MacLellan, who also says he wants Trotz back. Surely the Capitals will bring back the coach who delivered their franchise their first Stanley Cup ... right? [NHL]

Some offseason rumors and news: It sounds as if Lou and the Islanders are really making a press to sign John Tavares. Will we finally get a big free agent move? Or does he stay with the Islanders? [TSN]

The Bruins say they’re planning to speak to Ilya Kovalchuk’s camp as the Russian forward makes his NHL return. Of the teams we’ve heard of talking about signing Kovalchuk, this seems like the best fit so far, at least in my mind. [NHL]

Capitals backup goaltender Philipp Grubauer is an RFA this summer. Does Washington move him?

P.A. Parenteau, the guy who was just about annually available at the trade deadline it seemed, is retiring from hockey after 10 years in the league. [TSN]
