New Jersey Devils Prospect Update: 4/17/18

The twenty-eighth week of the 2017-18 prospect update is here. It’s highlighted by the Devils signing Joey Anderson to an ELC, Marian Studenic and Colby Sissons find themselves advancing in CHL action, and the likes of Michael McLeod, Brett Seney, and Cam Johnson see their seasons end with the conclusion of Binghamton’s campaign.

QMJHL

Jocktan Chainey saw his season come to an end as #4 Halifax was swept by #9 in their President’s Cup Quarterfinals series. Chainey had 2 assists and a -3 in Game 3 on Tuesday and was held off the scoresheet in Game 4 on Wednesday. Chainey finishes the playoffs with 2 goals, 6 assists, 4 PIM, -1, and 16 shots in 9 games. He doesn’t turn 19 until September and will return to Halifax next season where he will have a chance to play in the Memorial Cup as they host it.

OHL

Michael McLeod had an assist, -3, and 6 shots over Binghamton’s final 3 games of the season last week. He finished with an assist, -6, 2 PIM, and 9 shots in 6 games with Binghamton.

Marian Studenic helped #1 Hamilton to a 4-1 series victory over #4 Niagara. They advance to the Eastern Conference Finals against #3 Kingston. Studenic had 2 goals, +2, and 3 shots in Game 4 and was a -1 with a shot in Game 5. He currently has 2 goals, 4 assists, +7, 2 PIM, and 18 shots in 10 playoff games.

WHL

Colby Sissons helped #E2 Swift Current to a 4-3 Eastern Conference Semifinal win over #E1 Moose Jaw. Sissons a goal, 3 assists, +2, 8 PIM, and 14 shots in 5 games last week. He played a big role in the Game 7 victory last night with a goal and 2 assists. So far in 14 playoff games he has 2 goals, 10 assists, an even rating, 16 PIM, and 44 shots. Swift Current will take on #C2 Lethbridge in the Conference Final.

NCAA

Brett Seney had a goal, assist, -2, 6 PIM, and 8 shots in Binghamton’s final 3 games of the season last week. He finished with 3 goals, 5 assists, -5, 16 PIM, and 31 shots in 12 games for Binghamton.

On Sunday, the Devils signed Joey Anderson to a three-year, entry level contract which starts with the 2017-18 season. Julie Robenhymer has this article where Devils assistant general manager Tom Fitzgerald talks about Anderson. Here is what some of what he said, but I recommend checking out the whole article:

”He just has a drive to do the hard work,” he said. “You don’t ever have to ask him. He just does it and does a really good job at it, winning those 50/50 puck battles, and then he’s got some real good skill in tight areas to be able to generate something out of it, but his compete is top of the list for us. He’s a self-starter. He doesn’t need anyone to get him going and we know he’s going to bring that effort every day whether that’s at practice, in the weight room or in a game.”

Cam Johnson made 2 more starts for Binghamton before their season came to an end. He made 31 saves on 33 shots in an overtime loss to Hartford on Friday. He then made 25 saves on 29 shots in an overtime loss to Utica on Sunday. He went 0-1-2 in 3 games with a 3.90 GAA and .876 SV%.

Mikhail Maltsev had last week off as SKA-Neva prepared to take on Dynamo Spb in the VHL Finals which start today.

CSKA has advanced to the Gagarin Cup Final to play Ak Bars, but so far in the series Nikita Popugaev hasn’t seen any action. CSKA is currently down two games to none.

Europe

Gilles Senn has continued to play exhibition games for the Swiss team ahead of the World Hockey Championship next month.
