The 2019 World Junior Championships Open Discussion Post

The 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships are the premier under-20 hockey tournament of this hockey season. The international tournament features for New Jersey Devils prospects: Ty Smith, Fabian Zetterlund, Aarne Talvitie, and Akira Schimd. This is an open post to discuss the whole tourney as it happens.

Canada v Russia - 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship
This is from 2017 but it could have just as easily been from 2018...and maybe 2019 seeing this year’s WJCs are in Canada.

The 2019 World Junior Championships begin today! This the world’s premier under-20 hockey tournament. They will run from today through January 5, 2019.

The Host Cities: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

The Dates: December 26, 2018 through January 5, 2019

The Teams: This is an international tournament for players under the age of 20.

Group A: Canada, Czech Republic, Russia, Denmark, Switzerland

Group B: Finland, Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Sweden, United States

The Broadcasts: Canada: TSN and their many networks. Here is a full schedule.

United States: The NHL Network for most games and definitely all of the United States games. They typically use the TSN feed. Here is the schedule through NHL.com.

The Preview: Here is a preview I wrote yesterday for the whole tourney.

The Devils Involved: Defenseman Ty Smith for Canada, winger and assistant captain Fabian Zetterlund for Sweden, forward and team captain Aarne Talvitie for Finland, and goaltender Akira Schmid for Switzerland.

A Song for this Tourney?: NoMeansNo remains the best band to come out of Victoria. From their 1998 album, this is “Youth” from The Dance of the Headless Bourgeoise. Strangely, this was not on the original CD, but this and the song “Life Like” were on the original LP release. This was corrected on future re-issues of the CD and digital copies and whatnot.

This is an Open Post: Discuss all the games, the highlights, the big performances, the Devils prospects (Ty Smith, Fabian Zetterlund, Aarne Talvitie, and/or Akira Schmid), and more. This will be open until January 6.

The Rules: The rules remain the rules even when the game is on and it’s an international tournament. Please keep your comments clean, legal (read: no streams, no links to streams, no asking for streams, no streams), and all about the games itself. Just as importantly, let’s respect each other. There’s no need for drama or being unwelcoming of your fellow Devils fan. Thank you for reading. Go Devils prospects and/or nation of your choosing!
