Possible Goaltending Solution This Year

Cory Schneider has been terrible. There’s no need to go into much more detail. But there’s another goaltender who has been struggling for quite some time now, Scott Darling has a save percentage in the .800’s so far this season and last (Just go to the bottom of his capfriendly page for stats). Carolina signed him to a pretty large contract for a goalie and he has not lived up to it. Perhaps a change of scenery for Darling and Schneider can turn things around a little.

The contract situations for the two are not equal. Schneider has four years left at 6 million dollars with a full no trade clause. And as was shown in the other link, Darling has 3 years left at 4.15 million and a modified no trade clause. Obviously these two players cannot be traded one-for-one as the Devils would be put in a better situation. If the Devils retain half the salary on Schneider, Carolina would save 1.15 million for the next three seasons, but would have Schneider at 3 million for an extra year. The Devils would be paying an extra 1.15 million for the next three seasons, but would have Darling off the books a year earlier.

Change of scenery trades like these are hard to predict, because you need two GMs that are willing to take a chance on a certain player, and also be willing to look stupid if their player regains form and their stuck with dead weight. All of this can also be for nothing if the players vetoed it. But I just thought that this could be a possible way to get a decent goalie. If not, then we’re in the same position we’re at now.
