Welcome to the second game of what I am calling the pre-preseason. The New Jersey Devils will play the young players of the Pittsburgh Penguins for a Saturday afternoon affair.

The Time: 3:30 PM ET

The Broadcast: Streaming at the Devils’ official website.

The Matchup: The New Jersey Devils vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins (SBN Blog: PensBurgh)

The Previews: It’s still a prospect-only preseason game. There’s not really anything to preview. Expect that whoever didn’t play last night will play today. That said, Gerard does have five reasons why you should be excited for this three-game tourney. You should check those out.

The Last Devils Game: Against Buffalo, Nico Hischier and Will Butcher made their debuts and both looked good. Butcher was especially good with his blend of speed, hands, and willingness to get involved on offense. Especially on his pass for the team’s third goal. The Devils looked strong early on and definitely showed off a - yes - fast, attacking, supportive game. It went sideways as Buffalo rose to the task the penalties mounted. If there was a major complaint, it’d be that they took too many calls but the refs were similarly whistle-happy in the other game yesterday. The man of the night was, believe it or not, Ryan Kujawinski. The young man had a hat trick for the Devils, with a late third period equalizer to make it 3-3. In overtime, Michael Kapla jumped up on offense and finished the game to make it a 4-3 victory for the Devils’ prospects over Buffalo. Very nice.

The Devils Prospects to Know: The Devils’ roster does boast center Nico Hischier and defenseman Will Butcher. But there are more than just those two. The Devils took 27 prospects to this tourney so there’s a chance you can see plenty of the players who didn’t play last night. I’d expect Mackenzie Blackwood, at least, among the scratches. The plan is that everyone’s going to play a bit, so expect some changes.

The Penguins Prospects to Know: The Penguins’ roster is linked in this post at their official website as a .PDF file. Great. Jeff Carpenter is more charitable and wrote a post at the Penguins’ site highlighting prospects from that roster. Among them, look for forwards Daniel Sprong and Zach Aston-Reese, along with defenseman Zachary Lauzon. Assuming they play since Pittsburgh played yesterday afternoon.

The Goal: No injuries. Still the goal.

The Song of the Afternoon: Since this is effectively a Gamethread, here’s a song. “Break Down the Walls” by the youth crew hardcore pioneers, Youth of Today.

The Rules: As usual, keep it clean, respect your fellow Devils fan and wayward soul that has yet to admit their support of the Devils, and keep it relevant to the game.

Go Devils! No injuries!
