New Jersey Devils Prospect Update: 5/2/17

Week 30 of the 2016-17 prospect update saw McLeod and Bastian help Mississauga advance to the OHL Finals and Albany's season come to an end.

This post will recap the 30th week of Devils prospect action for the 2016-17 season. It's highlighted by Mississauga advancing to the OHL Finals and Albany falling in the 1st round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.

#2 Mississauga swept #1 Peterborough in the OHL Eastern Conference Finals, capturing the Bobby Orr Trophy. They will meat the top seed from the Western Conference, Erie, in the OHL Championship. The series begins on 5/4 and you can see the full schedule here.

Michael McLeod had a goal, assist, +3, shot, and won 9/12 faceoffs in the series clinching game on Wednesday. Nathan Bastian had an assist, +3, 3 shots, and won 6/13 faceoffs in that game. I'm just going to go ahead here and give McLeod the usual "Prospect of the Week" honors. He currently ranks tied for 3rd in points (25), tied for 6th in goals (9), 3rd in assists (16), and 1st in +/- (19) in the OHL Playoffs.

#N3 Albany lost their best of 5 series against #N2 Toronto 3-1 in the Divisional Semifinals.

Injury Update: Scott Wedgewood (shoulder) was able to back up Blackwood for Games 3 and 4, though Albany did not need to call him into action. Joe Blandisi (upper body) and Miles Wood (undisclosed) both missed Games 3 and 4.

Transactions: Colby Sissons was reassigned to Albany by New Jersey on 4/25.

Wednesday 4/26 (Game 3): Albany lost 3-2 to Toronto in overtime. John Quenneville had a power play goal with Karl Stollery and Ben Sexton earning the assists. Carter Camper had a goal with Steve Santini and Blake Pietila getting the assists. Quenneville had 5 shots followed by Vojtech Mozik and Nick Lappin with 4 each as the Devils outshot the Marlies 29-25. Mackenzie Blackwood made 22 saves, allowing the game winning goal 45 seconds into overtime. Albany went 1/4 on the PP and 2/2 on the PK. Here is the gamesheet.

Friday 4/28 (Game 4): Albany lost 2-1 to Toronto in triple overtime to end their season. Carter Camper had the Devils only goal with John Quenneville and Ben Sexton earning the assists. Camper had 5 shots followed by Lappin with 3 as the Devils were outshot 60-31. Mackenzie Blackwood put in an admirable performance with 58 saves in almost 107 minutes of action. Albany went 0/3 on the PP and 2/2 on the PK. Here is the gamesheet.

#N1 Adirondack lost their Eastern Conference Divisional Semifinal series to #N4 Manchester 4-2. Brandon Baddock had an assist, -1, and a shot in the final game of the series.

ADevil of the Week

I have to give this week's honors to Mackenzie Blackwood. Though he was on the losing end of 2 overtime contests and saw his season come to an end, he gave Albany a chance to win. The young netminder ended up with a .941 SV% in over 167 minutes of play across 2 games thanks to multiple overtime periods. After a very impressive junior career, expectations were high for the rookie netminder. Though he didn't meet them with an underwhelming rookie season, he showed flashes of what made him a successful goaltender at the junior level and why so many think he has the potential to play in the NHL someday. Hopefully he can build on the lessons learned this season and have an above average sophomore season as a pro next year.
