In response to Russia’s elaborate doping scheme, the International Olympic Committee has ruled that Team Russia as an official entity will be banned from the 2018 Winter Olympics. Competitors can be allowed to compete but only in a neutral team capacity. [New York Times]

To bring it a little closer to home: This means Ilya Kovalchuk, who remained in the KHL this year with at least the consolation of going to the Olympics and likely win gold for Team Russia, will, at best, be only able to win gold for Generic World Team. The Seattle Times is reporting that an NHL franchise announcement is expected in the Emerald City by July. [Seattle Times]
