The Song for Tonight: Since I mentioned Sweden, it’s appropriate to pick a song associated with Swedish melodic death metal. The Gothenburg sound was a big, big influence in the last decade and even today. A perfect example is the title track from At The Gates’ 1995 album Slaughter of the Soul. It certainly sounds like something you’d hear more recently than the mid-90s. (And if you want a second example, check out “Cold” from that album, which features an astounding guitar solo by Andy LaRocque, who was a member of Chuck Schuldiner’s Death.)
