Fantasy Hockey Monday: Week 18 Recap

Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

We're getting right into it this week.

Two Game Teams: Columbus Blue Jackets

Four Game Teams: Anaheim Ducks, Calgary Flames, Carolina Hurricanes, Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild, Pittsburgh Penguins, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks

* Brad Marchand - 4 Goals (1 PPG, 1 SHG, 1 GWG), 3 Assists (1 SHA), 11 Shots, 6 PIM, +6

This is one of the better spreads we've seen this season, which covered every primary and secondary category except PPA. Marchand has a goal in 7 straight games, and 13 in the last 13. He only made this list once before, but it was also a 1st star performance, so he's now tied for 2nd in the rankings.

** Ryan Getzlaf - 2 Goals (1 PPG, 1 GWG), 6 Assists, 9 Shots, 8 Hits, 8 Blocks, +4

After a remarkably slow start, Getz has picked things up. In the last 9 games, he has doubled his goals (from 3 to 6, it's been that bad for him) and helped out on 11 others. I expect this type of production to continue for the big guy. There's simply no way that first half was exemplary of what he has in the tank.

*** Pavel Datsyuk - 5 Goals (4 PPG), 2 Assists, 20 Shots

He just beat out his teammate, Henrik Zetterberg for the 3rd star, who had 3 goals and 4 assists. Datsyuk has come alive a bit in the last 5 games, netting 5 goals and picking up 4 assists.

Rankings: 11 Points - Patrick Kane, 6 Points - Matt Duchene & Brad Marchand, 5 Points - 4 Tied

* Victor Hedman - 1 Goal, 4 Assists (1 PPA), 9 Shots, 6 Hits, 5 Blocks

He's not an elite fantasy defenseman, but he had a decent week here. Hedman doesn't really stand out as exceptional in any fantasy category, yet he ends up on everyone's top fantasy lists. I let myself be influenced and even put him on mine.

** Roman Josi - 1 Goal, 4 Assists (1 PPA, 1 SHA), 5 Shots, 5 Blocks

This is the first time we've seen him on this list since week 10. That's not to say he hasn't been producing, though. His 42 points is 5th by a defenseman.

*** Shayne Gostisbehere - 1 Goal (1 PPG), 3 Assists (2 PPA), 11 Shots

He broke the rookie defensemen record by recording a point in 12 straight games, a streak that is still going. He didn't do, nor ever does, a lot with the secondary stats, but his point production has been far better than what you'd expect from a rookie Flyer defenseman. He now has 31 points with 18 PPP in 37 games.

Rankings: 14 Points - Erik Karlsson, 8 Points - Roman Josi, Brent Burns, & Kris Letang, 6 Points - PK Subban

* Henrik Lundqvist - 3 Starts, 3 Wins, 1 Shutout, 82 Saves, 0.67 GAA, .976 SV%

The King reigned this week, taking 3 Ws in the Rangers' Metropolitan matchups (Devils, Penguins, Flyers). He is 11-5 since the new year. It seems that unless Lundqvist is standing on his head, the Rangers lose. He has only given up 3 or more goals in 6 of his starts since the new year and 5 of them resulted in losses. While this is his 5th time making this list, it is his first #1 star.

** Cory Schneider - 3 Starts, 2 Wins, 85 Saves, 1.32 GAA, .955 SV%

Without him, we'd be a disaster. Although, without him we'd have Connor McDavid. This is actually the first time Cory has earned a Star of the Week. That shows how consistent he is considering he's still one of the top 5 fantasy goalies.

*** Brian Elliot - 3 Starts, 2 Wins, 98 Saves, 1.62 GAA, .951 SV%

He has simply been phenomenal since Jake Allen's injury. This is the 3rd week in a row he's made the list.

Rankings: 14 Points - Corey Crawford, 9 Points - Henrik Lundqvist, 8 Points - Jonathan Quick & Craig Anderson

Benoit Pouliot (LW-EDM) - Last two weeks, 7 Games, 2 Goals (1 PPG, 1 SHG), 8 Assists (1 PPA), 13 Shots

He plays on the left side of Connor McDavid. That's pretty much all you need to hear. It's nice to see him getting special teams points, too.

Dustin Brown (LW-LAK) - Last two weeks, 6 Games, 3 Goals, 3 Assists, 18 Shots, 18 Hits

He has just 22 points on the season, but you get a lot more with him than points. He averages almost 3 shots and 3 hits per game. He has 4 goals and 4 assists in the last 9 games, which is a nice pace for him. If he can keep that up, he's a great grab. However, I don't foresee such a thing unfolding. Just keep an eye on him for now.

Jordan Staal (C-CAR) - Last two weeks, 5 Games, 1 Goal (1 PPG), 5 Assists, 6 Shots, 14 Hits

He has been a streaky player in the past, but he's been fairly consistent the last month and a half with 18 points in his last 16 games. He doesn't shoot very much, which I don't like. He has just 8 multiple shot games of the 16 game sampling, which includes 4 games where he didn't have any. The result of that is only 2 goals in the last 13 games. NOTE: The Canes have 4 games this week.

Adam Henrique - 2 Goals (2 PPG, 1 GWG), 2 Assists (1 PPA, 1 SHA), 4 Shots, 5 Blocks

This was a good week for Henrique owners. Not only did he have a point per game average, he had a terrific special teams categorical spread. His shooting percentage is 18.4%, which is the best in the league of players with 100 shots or more.

Travis Zajac - 1 Goal (1 SHG), 2 Assists (2 PPA), 4 Shots

Not a terrific fantasy stat line, but the shorthanded goal goes a long way.

Reid Boucher - 1 Goal (1 PPG, 1 GWG), 1 Assist (1 PPA), 11 Shots

Both of his points came on Marty night, but those are his only points in the last 10 games.

Keith Kinkaid - 1 Start, 1 Win, 1 Shutout, 28 Saves

He made his rare start count by earning his first career NHL shutout. Congratulations, Keith!

What's good? What's bad? Is anyone on the verge of making any big trades? Is anyone running the table in their league because of me? Is anyone mathematically eliminated from playoff contention because of me? Let's hear it in the comment section below.
