Earlier today the New Jersey Devils made further cuts, releasing Yann Danis, Dan Kelly, Graham Black, Rod Pelley, Ben Thomson, Chris McKelvie, and Jacob Sweeney. Tom Gulitti with the The Record, broke the news earlier today, noting that seven additional cuts were made.
All players will be sent back to the AHL affiliate, the Albany Devils. This move isn't necessarily surprising as based on the preseason performances, these players were less than surprising cuts. While none of these players were expected to make the final roster, most of them were previously playing in the AHL, or signed for that purpose. Notably Danis, who was signed recently, was expected to compete in the AHL for a job due to having Cory Schneider and Keith Kinkaid firmly established as the goal-tending duo in the NHL.
These roster cuts help trim down the NHL roster which was cut down yesterday with the previous trimming which was discussed yesterday. Still remaining at camp are 1st round picks, John Quennevile and Pavel Zacha and Stefan Matteau. Quenneville and Zacha have both received time on the top line in their respective games, with both centering Henrique and Palmieri.
What are your thoughts on the roster cuts? Do any of them surprise you? Are there any players who you would've liked to see on the team throughout camp? Let us know your thoughts and thank you for reading.
