While it is very much the offseason, some news came from an unlikely source that will cause some of you to check your calendars and block off some time for New Jersey Devils hockey. And not just any New Jersey Devils hockey, preseason New Jersey Devils hockey.
The Philadelphia Flyers announced their preseason schedule on their website earlier this morning. Their schedule is very local with seven games against the two New York teams and the team we all love and care about here. The Second Rate Rivals' last two games are with the Devils: September 28 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia and October 2 at the Rock. Both games are set for 7 PM EDT, no word on what the broadcast will be - assuming there will even be one.
This may provide a clue as to when the 2015-16 season will start. Last season, there were five days in between the final preseason game (10/4) and the first regular season game (10/9). In the 2013-14 season, there was a full week between the preseason finale (9/26) and the regular season opener (10/3). Likewise in 2011-12, there was another seven day gap between the end of the warm-up games (10/1) and the beginning of the games that counted (10/8). So presuming that October 2 is the last Devils preseason game - and it might be as it's Philly's last game - then the season will probably start the following week. We'll get confirmation of that when the full regular season schedule is released.
In the meantime, I'll try to keep you posted on the preseason schedule for the Devils. Either by the Devils announcing it themselves or when their opponents do so. I would guess that the Devils will probably stay local for their preseason games as they have been doing for the past few years. We'll see if that holds true for Fall 2015. Please leave your thoughts on this news in the comments, thank you for reading.
