Wrapping Up the ADevils Season

Let's take a look at how Albany did on the team level and individual level this season. First, here are some charts related to their all situation PDO and special teams play:

ADevilsPDO

ADevilsRollingPDO

ADevilsPPPK

Albany finished the year with a normal 100.11% PDO. You can see from the charts that the team had a collective slump in about the 3rd quarter of the season before having a resurgence to close the year out. Looking at the special teams chart, it's evident that a tough stretch of ineffectiveness on the PK hurt their overall number, though they did close out the season strong in that department. The PP was fairly consistent and they did finish as the 5th best team in the AHL in that category.

A reminder that Goals Created is a metric from Hockey-Reference which is explained here. It takes into account a players offensive production by weighing the value of goals over assists and then factoring in the team totals.

It's no surprise to see the leaders were Paul Thompson, Joe Whitney, Mike Sislo, Reid Boucher, and Brandon Burlon. If we look on a per game basis (minimum 40 games) we get a leaderboard of Joe Whitney, Paul Thompson, Mike Sislo, Scott Timmins, and Raman Hrabarenka. It certainly is encouraging to see Hrabarenka make the list.

Switching over to even strength production we get a top 5 of Paul Thompson, Joe Whitney, Brandon Burlon, Darcy Zajac, and Mike Sislo. On a per game basis the leaders were Joe Whitney, Paul Thompson, Scott Timmins, Raman Hrabarenka, and Tim Sesito. I'm not that surprised to see Timmins up on the list. He's generally productive when healthy, he just got hit hard by the injury bug this season.

TmG% = % of Team Goals, TmA% = % of Team Assists, TmPt% = % of Team Points, TmPt1% = % of Team Primary Points, TmSF% = % of Team Shots For

The top 5 in TmG% were Paul Thompson, Joe Whitney, Mike Sislo, Reid Boucher, and Stefan Matteau which is no surprise. When it came to TmA% the top players were Joe Whitney, Brandon Burlon, Reece Scarlett, Paul Thompson, and Mike Sislo. Clearly, Burlon and Scarlett benefited from roles on the PP with 15 PPA for Burlon and 14 for Scarlett. The good news for Scarlett is that he is still young enough to potentially have a future in New Jersey while Burlon's career season came a bit too late for him to factor into the Devils future plans.

Joe Whitney, Paul Thompson, Mike Sislo, Brandon Burlon, and Reid Boucher finished as the top 5 in TmPt%. When you look at TmPt1%, the top 5 becomes Paul Thompson, Joe Whitney, Mike Sislo, Brandon Burlon, and Reid Boucher. Finally, when we look at who took the bulk of the shots, we get Paul Thompson, Reid Boucher, Joe Whitney, Mike Sislo, and Tim Sesito as the top 5.

Goaltending

Scott Wedgewood and Scott Clemmensen were the main goaltenders for Albany this season. By the end of the year, Clemmensen earned the starting spot and finished at about league average with a .918 SV% and a 52.00% Quality Start%. Wedgewood had another disappointing professional season with a .903 SV%, below the league average, and had just a 47.06% Quality Start% mark. In terms of Goals Saved Above Average, Clemmensen was a +2.80 while Wedgewood was a -10.21. Wedgewood will be 23 next season and hasn't been above league average in any of his 3 professional seasons across the AHL or ECHL. With Maxime Clermont also struggling in the ECHL for the past few years and Clemmensen up their in age, the Devils may want to look for options outside of the organization for next year.

Orlando lost their playoff series to Florida 4-2. Alexandre Carrier did not play while Maxime Clermont had a brief relief apperance. Eric Baier and Mike Keenan were not able to provide much offense from the blue line for Orlando in the series. Ben Johnson had an impact in the series, seeing time on a line with his former Windsor Spitfires teammate Brady Vail, as he had 2 goals and 2 assists in 4 games.

Prospect of the Week

John Quenneville was named the WHL Player of the Week and the WHL website has highlights from his 5 point game here. Quenneville earned the reptuation last season as a strong playoff performer when he had 5 goals and 8 assists in 9 games. This year he has 6 goals and 8 assists in 12 games. Over his last 14 games (regular season + playoffs), Quenneville has 6 goals and 12 assists which is really encouraging after an underwhelming regular season. He did miss time on multiple occasions in the regular season due to injuries and I wonder if he was playing a fair amount of games far from "100%" health wise. It would explain the drop in production that isn't typical from a 1st rounder in his post draft year.

Your Take

Has Quenneville's playoff performance changed your opinion on his season? Would you like to see a bit more out of Kujawinski given his age and experience? Do any of the ADevils stand out to you in a good or bad way from a statistics perspective? Leave your comments below and thank you for reading!
