New Jersey Devils Draft Joey Dudek with First Sixth Round Pick in 2014 Draft

The New Jersey Devils got Florida's sixth round pick by trading Krys Barch in 2013. They used that pick to take BC-committed forward Joey Dudek. This is a quick reaction post of the selection.

The New Jersey Devils had Florida's sixth round pick due to the Krys Barch trade.  They used this selection at 152nd overall to take Kimball Union Academy star forward Joey Dudek.  He's not particularly large as he stands at 5'11" and 179 pounds according to his profile at Elite Prospects. While most haven't known him - a function of playing prep school hockey - he will get a lot more attention in due time.  Dudek is committed to play for one of college hockey's biggest schools, Boston College.  Here are his stats at EP:

Interestingly, Dudek did play for the U.S. at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament, so he turned some heads; but that's the extent of his international play.  Jeff Cox has a short profile on Dudek at SBN College Hockey. Cox noted that Dudek has shown some offensive flash but will need to work on the defensive end.  He'll get a chance to develop both under Jerry York at BC.

Incidentally, Dudek was highlighted among other Kimball Union Academy players in this March article in the Valley News. Here's what Dudek had to say about what he needs to work on:

"Two main things I need to improve on is what everyone needs, staying in the gym and getting stronger and working to get quicker on the ice," said Dudek, a Boston College-bound senior who will play junior hockey next winter. "Each level is about development and getting faster. A personal thing for myself is probably shooting the puck more. I’m a little too selfless instead of selfish. It’s good to mix it up."

As a sixth round pick, I'm actually pleased with this selection.  The Devils finally take a chance on a prospect with offensive flash.  He'll get to go to a great college environment.   If things don't pan out, then it's not a big deal as it's only a sixth round selection.
