What Will the New Jersey Devils Add? The 2014 NHL Trade Deadline Open Post

There have been plenty of trades made ahead of the 2014 NHL Trade Deadline. There will be plenty more trades and all kindsof talk today. This is an open post for ILWT users to discuss all that's going on with the New Jersey Devils and other teams.

Martin Brodeur was given a big ovation after last night's 4-3 win over Detroit. Will it be his last in New Jersey?

While the New Jersey Devils got an important regulation win over a team they're chasing in the standings, there was a lot of action in terms of trades on Tuesday.   Here's just a few of the big ones that happened on the eve of the 2014 NHL Trade Deadline:

  • Vancouver dealing Roberto Luongo back to Florida in exchange for Jacob Markstrom and Shawn Mattias. (TSN)
  • Washington adding Dustin Penner for a pick (Sportsnet) and then getting defenseman Rostislav Klesla, Chris Brown, and a fourth for Martin Erat and John Mitchell (Sportsnet)
  • Philadelphia deciding to add Andrew "My CF% makes Bryce Salvador look like Andy Greene" MacDonald for picks and a minor leaguer. (
  • Ilya Bryzgalov ended up in Minnesota, while Edmonton picked up Viktor Fasth. (SBN)

All of that happened and so much more.   All trades have to be filed with the league office by 3 PM EDT so there will be plenty more where that came from.  There have been plenty of chatter.  Did Ryan Kesler really request a trade?  Who else will be sold off in Buffalo's firesale?  Is Steve Yzerman really going to trade his team's leading scorer, Martin St. Louis?   Is Ales Hemsky going to play for a team that doesn't try to convince their fans that rebuilding takes more than eight seasons?  Who will Thomas Vanek play for as of 3:01 PM EDT?   With so many teams still in playoff positions or not far from one, it'll be really interesting to see who makes what move.

The New Jersey Devils should be expected to be buyers.  In denying reports that Martin Brodeur was heading to the Wild, Lou Lamoriello was quoted by the media.  From this Tuesday morning Fire & Ice post by Tom Gulitti:

"Whatever is said between Marty and I is between Marty and I. And don’t read into that that there is anything. Right now, all I’m doing today and tomorrow is trying to make this team better. I believe in this team and I’m doing whatever I can to make it better."

That's not something a seller would say.  Plus, Gulitti makes a good point in the article.  Why would a player with a deal in place play in a game and risk injury or an awful performance that kills the deal?   That leads me to this point.  Lou doesn't make deals when they go public.  If anything, it's a great way to get Lou to scuttle a trade.  So if you see anything involving a Devil, take it with a grain of salt.  If it's imminent, then we'll all know about it just as it happens.

While there was plenty of furor around Brodeur on Tuesday, who knows if he gets traded today.  He at least says he's still a Devil, per Gulitti on Tuesday night.  With all of the other goalies that have moved so far plus the possible availability of Jaroslav Halak in Buffalo (for now) and goalies in Carolina, who's going to think Brodeur's a more attractive option?    I'm still skeptical that he gets moved - regardless of how many teams Brodeur is willing to waive his no-trade clause, as tweeted by Darren Dreger. More importantly, I think the Devils still need offensive help, particularly at wing.  Do the Devils finally move one of the many defensemen in the organization to get a winger?  Do they move someone young or old?  Do they go big or make a low risk deal?   My fingers are crossed that it's not that bad.  And better than, say, getting Mike Cammalleri.

In any case, this is the place where you can discuss all of the trades that did happen and the ones that are made today.   Feel free to worry about Washington getting stronger or laugh at the Flyers adding Andy MacDonald.   Talk about what you want to see happen and react to what actually does happen.  Post your clean reactions. (I'm sure Tyler Dellow's liveblog should be fun.)  All of that is allowed in the comments.Standard site rules apply, with two special ones for this day.

First, link to all your sources.  Don't type "I saw this on Twitter," please link or embed the tweet.   If you see something on TV, then fine, but if it's through a reputable news site like TSNSportsnetCBCESPNPuck Daddy, a beat reporter (like Gulitti), SBN (in fact, check out the SBN Trade Rumors & News hub!), or even the NHL, then please link to it.  We all benefit from it and you look much better for it.

Second, do not - I repeat - do not provide false information.   it benefits no one to provide junk from, say, an "insiderr," some guy named Bob, a fake Twitter account, or some other guy who knows a guy who knows a guy.  I assure you, he doesn't know.    If you see someone reliable with a rumor or news, like Bob McKenzie or Darren Dreger or Nick Kypreos or Pierre LeBrun or Tom Gulitti or someone like that, then that's fine.  In fact, it's encouraged.  But leave the garbage elsewhere.   I do not want to have to spend my day taking out the trash.

I will be around all day.  Anything the Devils do will get their own post.  When it's all said and done, I'll have a round up of "How it Affects NJ" for the other major deals in addition to a summary.  Let's have some fun and hope the Devils are a better team by 4 PM than they are right now.
