Albany Notes:
- The Devils fell to the Hershey Bears last Thursday in the shootout 3-2. While Stefan Matteau and Reid Boucher scored, Scott Wedgewood made 20 saves. They were leading into the third period, but let up the equalizer about halfway through that period. Matteau was the only Devil to score in the shootout.
- The Devils defeated the Adirondack Phantoms 4-1 on Friday. Wedgewood only had to make 14 saves in the victory while the Devils posted 31 shots. There was a goal from each of Albany's four lines with Rod Pelley, Tim Sestito, Mattias Tedenby, and Joe Whitney. You can watch the highlights here:
- In their final game of the weekend, the Devils were embarrassed with a 7-3 loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. In Wedgewood's fifth-straight start and third in three days, he made just six saves on eleven shots in the first period and was replaced by Hedberg who made 11 saves on 13 shots. Raman Hrabarenka scored two goals in his first game since January 26, and Joe Whitney scored one goal, giving him 19 on the season.
- Joe Whitney had two goals and two assists in two games this weekend. His scoring had slowed down a bit in recent weeks, but he seems to have gotten it back this weekend.
- David Wohlberg made his way back from injury this weekend. Before playing last week, he missed a total of seven games and had two assists in his first three games back.
- While Jon Merrill was assigned to Albany during the Olympic break, he didn't play a game with the team. He was reassigned to New Jersey yesterday afternoon.
- Rany Miller of NJ.com caught up with Adam Larsson to talk about his feeling about being stuck in the AHL since recovering from his injury. He talks discusses his frustration with his situation along with his feelings on how the Devils are handling his development. You can read it here.
- Miller also spoke to Stefan Matteau and Albany coach Rick Kowalsky about his play this season. He has quotes from both about his issues with previous teams and his play for the Devils this season. Here is the link for that article.
- Keith Kinkaid returned to practice after missing four games with a groin strain. Johan Hedberg was released from his PTO.
- I've had this link for about two weeks and forgot to post it in my updates, but here is an interview with the New Jersey Devils Director of Scouting, David Conte. He was on the NHL Network Radio's Hockey Prospects show and discusses his thoughts on the prospects in the Devils' system, mainly Santini, Kujawinski, Matteau, Severson, Boucher, Coleman, Johnson, and Scarlett. Give that a listen here.
Other Notes:
- While Anthony Brodeur played in two games last week, he wasn't counted with a loss in either. He came in as relief in the first and made seven saves on seven shots and was pulled in the following game, but wasn't responsible for the lost.
- While Miami has been struggling mightily as of late, scoring more than two goals just once in it's last nine games, the return of Blake Coleman may be on the horizon. He travelled with the team last weekend, and while he didn't play, it is a major step in the right direction. He may be back in the lineup this weekend or next.
Prospect Profile:
There wasn't a major standout this week, so I am going to do another prospect profile. I may make this a weekly addition, as well. This week will be focusing on Myles Bell.
The 160th overall pick for the Devils has had a lot of success for an older draft pick and he seems to have put his troubled past behind him. At 6" and 210 lbs, he sat through two full drafts before being selected by the Devils in the sixth round of 2013 partly due to a fatal car accident in which he was the driver. He hasn't forgotten what has happened nor does he take it lightly, but he is trying to make his life more positive, and his game is a huge part of that.
He originally played defense and switched to forward just last season with the Kelowna Rockets. In his second season as a forward, he is leading the team in both goals (38) and points (66). He has eleven more points than the second highest on the team. He also has nine power play goals, the most for the Rockets. He has been named the WHL Player of the Week twice this season and has been huge for the top team in the league who has lost only eight games in regulation.
His 38 goals in 56 games matches his total from last season (69 games played). When he played defense, he still put up a descent amount of points including 45 (14g, 31a) with the Regina Pats in 2010-2011. His slap shot has been clocked at 98mph, and he still has solid defensive skills. He should be in Albany next season, as he is an over-ager in the WHL this year. It will be exciting to see what he can do when he turns pro as he is a big question mark in the organization.
Are you relieved to see Keith Kinkaid return to practice for Albany? Do you think Blake Coleman can help Miami turn their season around when he returns? What are your thoughts on Myles Bell? Do you think he will perform well when he turns pro? Please discuss your thoughts on these questions and anything prospect related in the comments section below. Thanks for reading.
