This post will recap the seventh week of Devils prospect action for the 2014-15 season. It's highlighted by Alexander Kerfoot's five point game, Blake Pietila's Michigan Tech climbing to the #1 ranking as well as the Albany Devils penalty kill go from a weakness to a strength. Check out the stats below!

Both Devils OHL prospects played two games this past week. Ryan Kujawinski scored two goals and two assists to extend his scoring streak to three games. Hopefully this is a sign of him coming around this season. Connor Chatham was held scoreless and a -4 in his two games over the week.

In WHL action, John Quenneville started his week off playing for Team WHL in the second game of the Super Series against Team Russia. It was a home game for him in Brandon but he was held off the scoresheet. In two games last week with the Wheat Kings, he managed to pot a goal to keep his solid season going. Fellow WHL prospects, Ryan Rehill and Brandon Baddock were also in action. Rehill had four penalty minutes in two games while Baddock had an assist in Edmonton's only game.

Anthony Brodeur's tough season continued as he was given his first start since losing the starting role in Gatineau but only lasted 6:18 as he allowed three goals on four shots. He didn't dress as the back up in the following game so he's even in danger of losing that spot.

Blake Coleman had a quiet weekend for Miami as they split a series with North Dakota. He did manage to go 22/32 in the faceoff circle though. Blake Pietila helped Michigan Tech climb to #1 in the college hockey rankings with an undefeated 10-0 record. He had an assist on the weekend to stay at nearly a point per game clip this season. Pietila did have a rare tough weekend taking faceoffs, only going 9/32.

Alexander Kerfoot leads Harvard in scoring thanks in large part to a three goal, two assist game against Boston College's third string goaltender in the middle of the week. He picked up another assist on the weekend and improved in the faceoff circle. Speaking of Boston College, they are 2-4 without the injured Steve Santini.

Joshua Jacobs added an assist in the only Michigan State game over the week. He has three assists in his last four games.

Artur Gavrus played three games for Dinamo Minsk and saw his ice time drop in each from 16:45 to 9:08 to 8:37. He only managed one shot over that time and is currently on a seven game scoreless streak.

Joey Dudek sat out Dubuque's first game of the weekend, either for injury or as a healthy scratch, but scored on his return to the line up against Cedar Rapids. Hopefully he can build off of what has been a slow start to his USHL career.

Miles Wood played in the New England Prep Hockey League All-Star game on 11/9. He led the U19 South team to a 7-4 victory over U19 North with two goals and two assists in the game.

Transactions: New Jersey made a few roster moves yesterday that will affect Albany. Scott Clemmensen returns to the big club to back up Cory Schneider and Keith Kinkaid returns to Albany. Veteran defenseman Peter Harrold returns to New Jersey to provide insurance with Bryce Salvador out with a lower body injury as the Devils embark on a road trip.

Wednesday 11/12: Albany suffered a shootout loss to Syracuse 3-2. Scott Timmins scored the first Devils goal thanks to an assist by Paul Thompson. Tim Sestito added the second on an assist by Reece Scarlett. Thompson had the lone Devils goal in the shootout as Mike Sislo and Reid Boucher were stopped. Scott Wedgewood made 23 saves on 25 shots as well as 1 on 3 attempts in the shootout. The Devils were outshot by the Crunch 25-22 and went 0/4 on the PP and 7/7 on the PK. Here is the gamesheet and highlights:

Friday 11/14: Albany shutout Portland 4-0. Tim Sestito led the way with a goal and two assists. Joe Whitney, Reid Boucher, and Mark Fraser added the other goals. Mike Sislo had two assists and Scott Timmins and Paul Thompson added one each. Scott Clemmensen had a 31 save shutout as the Devils outshot the Pirates 36-31. Albany was 0/7 on the PP and 7/7 on the PK. Here is the gamesheet.

Saturday 11/15: Albany lost to Portland 2-0. Tim Sestito had five shots, Reece Scarlett four, and Ben Thomson three. Scott Clemmensen made 22 saves on 23 shots as the Devils outshot the Pirates 27-24. Here is the gamesheet.

Special Teams: It was a mixed week for the Devils on special teams. They recovered from a horrific penalty killing performance the prior week and killed off all 20 power plays against them to raise their success rate to 80.49% on the season. However, they struggled mightily on the power play going scoreless on 14 attempts, lowering their success rate to 16.44%.

Injury Update: Per Pete Dougherty of the Times Union, Kelly Zajac returned to practice a week ago but wasn't ready to return for this past week's action. Cam Janssen is still sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Crowded Roster: With a crowded roster to start the season, newcomers Ben Johnson and Joe Faust have only appeared in three and one game respectively. Fellow rookies, Graham Black and Ben Thomson were able to jump on their opportunities to solidify a starting spot when given the chance. I wonder if Johnson and Faust could be ECHL bound at some point?

It was a slow week for Myles Bell as he had just a goal in three games. He did manage 8 shots over that span and is still nearly at a point per game pace for the season.

Maxime Clermont hasn't had a strong professional career, never cracking the .900 SV% mark at any point in his three plus ECHL seasons. He's off to another lackluster start with a .867 SV% in 4 starts this season. Two of his three starts this past week resulted in him giving up four goals while he managed just to give up three in the other start.

Prospect of the Week

Since I highlighted Alexander Kerfoot last week, I'll go in a different direction this week. With two goals and two assists in two games this past week, Ryan Kujawinski takes the honors. The skilled center with nice size (6'2, 207) was considered a 1st round talent entering his draft year for the 2012-13 season. He put up a solid 48 points in 66 games that year but fell to the third round where the Devils scooped him up. Last season he was nearly a point per game player but fell short of having a successful year due to injuries and inconsistent play. Still he managed to produce 41 points in 45 games showing that his offensive skill was still evident. I was hoping for a breakout season for the 19 year old this season but he started off slow with just 7 points in his first 15 games. Since then he's picked up with a three game scoring streak which will hopefully be him turning the corner. He may not be as highly regarded of a prospect as he was entering his draft season, but he still has the skillset and size to turn into an interesting player. Will he be able to stay healthy and find consistency? We'll have to wait and see.

ADevil of the Week

With 53 saves on 54 shots in two starts, Scott Clemmensen earns this week's honors. Not only did he earn a shutout, but he helped kill off 13 power plays against to keep Albany's PK perfect on the week. Clemmensen now gets to return to New Jersey where he will resume the back up role as Keith Kinkaid moves back down to get more playing time.

Your Take

How do you feel about the strong starts by John Quenneville and Alexander Kerfoot? Are you concerned about the lack of production by Artur Gavrus and Joey Dudek? What do you make of the resurgence of a strong penalty kill for Albany? Leave your comments below and thank you for reading!
