New Jersey Devils Prospect Update: Week 1

A look at the Devils prospects after the first week of the AHL season saw a few impressive players stand out.

Welcome to the first New Jersey Devils prospect update of the 2013-2014 season. While we are still waiting for college hockey to begin, the AHL, KHL, OHL, WHL, and QMJHL seasons have begun and some Devils' prospects are impressing early.

Albany Devils Notes:

  • The Albany Devils fell to the Hartford Wolf Pack on Sunday 4-3.
  • Jon Merrill and Joe Whitney had multi point nights. Merrill had three assists and Whitney had a goal and an assist
  • Scott Timmins and David Wohlberg had the other Albany goals.
  • Keith Kinkaid started in net and had 18 saves on 22 shots.
  • Albany will host Utica this Saturday for their home opener.
  • Rod Pelley was named captain of the team with while Chris McKelvie and Tim Sestito are acting as assistant captains.
  • Scott Wedgewood was named the second goalie in Albany while Maxime Clermont was sent to the Elmira Jackals.

Other Notes:

  • Graham Black has had an impressive start to the season with the Swift Current Broncos. He has four goals and four assists in just six games.
  • Ben Johnson of the Windsor Spitfires and Myles Bell of the Kelowna Rockets both have five goals in five games.
  • 2013 draft pick Ryan Kujawinski has four goals and two assists in six games so far this season with the Kingston Frontenacs.

Prospect of the Week:

With eight points in six games, the prospect of the week is Graham Black of the Swift Current Broncos. In the Broncos home opener, Black had three assists in a 5-3 over the Saskatoon Blades. The team is 5-1-1 on the season and Black is leading the team in goals with four. He was also named an alternate captain through a team vote for the 2013-2014 season.
