New Jersey Devils European League Round-Up: Week 15

Kovalchuk nets three and an otherwise quiet week from the Devils abroad as the KHL had a New Years break.

It's the fifteenth week of NHL players playing abroad in Europe. The New Jersey Devils still have four players who are playing abroad. Those players include superstar Ilya Kovalchuk, Artur Gavrus, Vladimir Zharkov, and Anton Volchenkov. Kovalchuk played two games and Vladimir Zharkov played one game while the other two were idle.

Stats

Player League Team GP G A P PIM +/-
Ilya Kovalchuk KHL SKA St. Petersburg 32 17 22 39 10 19
Artur Gavrus Belarus HC Neman 15 5 8 13 0 10
Artur Gavrus IIHF Belarus U-20 5 5 5 10 4 7

Anton Volchenkov KHL Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod 10 0 0 0 14 -3

1.22, that is Kovalchuk's points per game. A very impressive number when you consider the number of NHL players who are playing in the KHL. Kovalchuk played two games this week and recorded three goals, an assist, and a plus two. After Kovalchuk's quiet week beofre this, he is right back on track to being the top scorer in the KHL. This is evident in SKA's goal differential of +43, the best in the KHL. Zharkov played one game with CSKA this week. That game happened to be against Kovalchuk's SKA. CSKA won 2-1, but Kovalchuk and Zharkov had no goals in the game. Zharkov had no change in his stats from last week. Anton Volchenkov did not play a game this week. Artur Gavrus also did not play after his impressive performance in the IIHF.

Highlights

At about the 1:30 mark of the video Kovalchuk takes a slapshot from the top of the circle and it goes top shelf to win the game against Slovan Bratislava.

At the 2:20 mark, Kovalchuk has a beautiful cross-ice assist. At the 3:25 mark, there are two goals by Kovalchuk with the second being an empty netter.

Team Standings

KHL Standings

SKA is 1st in the Western Conference as well as the KHL. They are destroying their competition and are looking like a great playoff team and possibly the team to beat in the KHL. CSKA is 4th in the West and will most likely make the playoffs with a plus 29 goal differential being one of the best in the league. Torpedo is in tenth place, but only two points out of 8th place.

Over in the Belarus League, HC Neman is holding steady in third place with a solid 17 point lead from the fourth place team, Liepayac Metalurgc.

Rank Player Power Rankings: Week 15 Change
1 Kovalchuk Another superstar week from Kovy, as expected +1
2 Gavrus No games played -1
3 Zharkov No change to stats -
4 Volchenkov No games played -

In the power rankings Kovalchuk took first place from Gavrus after his impressive four point week. Everyone else kept their same ranking since they either didn't play or had no change to their stats. That's it for the fifteenth, and hopefully last, week of European play. Thanks for reading!
