With the No. 29 pick of the 2012 NHL Draft, the New Jersey Devils have selected Stefan Matteau, a centerman from the United States National Team Development Program, which competes in the United States Hockey League.
In his second season with the development program, Matteau notched 32 points (15 goals and 17 assists) in 46 games. This was a marked improvement from his 2010-11 season, in which he scored just nine points in 28 games. He will play for Blainville-Boisbrand in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in 2012-13. He was ranked No. 17 among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting, and No. 23 overall by TSN.
Matteau is the son of former NHLer Stefan Matteau, and was born just two months prior to Matteau's heroics in the 1994 Eastern Conference Final, as well as his father's Stanley Cup victory. The younger Matteau was born in Chicago and will represent the U.S. in international competition.
