Another week, another European Roundup. It's week 14 and there is seemingly no end in sight. There are still four Devils playing abroad; however, Artur Gavrus took a break from playing with HC Neman and played for the Belarus National teeam in the IIHF U-20 Championship. The rest of the Devils who are plying abroad managed to have a rather dull week.
Stats
Player | League | Team | GP | G | A | P | PIM | +/- |
Ilya Kovalchuk | KHL | SKA St. Petersburg | 30 | 14 | 21 | 35 | 10 | 17 |
Artur Gavrus | Belarus | HC Neman | 15 | 5 | 8 | 13 | 0 | 10 |
Artur Gavrus | IIHF | Belarus U-20 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 10 | 4 | 7 |

Anton Volchenkov | KHL | Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod | 10 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 14 |
-3 |
Ilya Kovalchuk has cooled off from his rampage across the KHL from earlier in the season. Kovalchuk recorded no points and a -2 in two games this week. Everyone has a down week somewhere in the season, this looks like it for Kovy. Hopefully he bounces back next week and keeps up his scoring pace. Vladimir Zharkov did not play this week. Volchenkov played four games and manged to record six penalty minutes, but no other changes to his stats.
The story this week is Gavrus. Gavrus captained the Belarus National team in the IIHF U-20 division one championships. Gavrus was named the best forward of the tournament, but Belarus fell short and took second place.to Norway. Much of the success of the Belarus National team was due to Gavrus' splendid performance. In five games he put up 5 goals and 5 assists. This is great to see from an up and coming Devils forward prospect. The ILWT writers named him number 21 on the top 25 Devils under 25. After a great performance like this I would like to see Gavrus come back to North America and play with his old team, the Owen Sound of the OHL. I feel he would develop better and perhaps sharpen his skillset as a high scoring forward, we all know the Devils need a few more of those prospects.
Power Rankings
Rank | Player | Power Ranking: Week 14 | Change |
1 | Gavrus | +2 | |
2 | Kovalchuk | -1 | |
3 | Zharkov | -1 | |
4 | Volchenkov | - |
Gavrus jumped up to first in the power rankings due to his performance on the Belarus National team. The other Devils playing abroad stayed in the same order since none of them picked up any points. Next week I'll give another update on the team standings for these players' teams. Thanks for reading.
