New Jersey Devils @ Philadelphia Flyers - Preseason Game #3 Preview

The Date: September 24, 2009

The Time: 7 PM EST

The Broadcast: I hope you live near Philly or in southern NJ - Comcast Sportsnet-Philly. Maybe 610 WIP?

The Situation:  The New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Islanders last night, 4-2, with this line-up:

Bergfors-Zajac-Langenbrunner
Rolston-Zubrus-Shanahan
Halischuk-Sestito-Zharkov
Peters-Pelley-Magnan-Grenier

Oduya-Martin
White-Murphy
Leach-Davison

Danis, Frazee

Presumably, most of these players will not play back-to-back - but some will have to complete the roster.  If only because Tyler Eckford and Ilkka Pikkarainen were still ill yesterday (per Gulitti) and may not be ready tomorrow.  Still, I think we are likely to see Zach Parise, David Clarkson, Andy Greene (maybe?), and Jay Pandolfo as well as prospects like Michael Swift, Alexander Vasyunov, and Patrice Cormier. Just like in yesterday's preseason game, expect some veterans to play with their usual linemates and partners mixed in with prospects largely playing with each other. All of whom practiced at the Rock this afternoon, as reported by Gulitti.  The only certainty is that Martin Brodeur will start, according to Rich Chere's report two days ago.  So there will be a change in net as Brodeur will play his first preseason game.

Again, the point of the game isn't necessarily to win, but to give a solid performance. The Philadelphia Flyers got exactly that in their last preseason game, defeating the Red Wings 5-2 on Monday. According to Geoff Detweiler, who recapped the game at Broad Street Hockey, Mika Pyorala and James van Reimsdyk are making very strong cases to make the team.  If they play tonight, and they might, then I recommend pay extra attention to them.  Both could cause a lot of problems for the defense and Brodeur.  It'll be interesting to see how the Devils will perform in special teams play - the Flyers' units are better than you might think.

Of course, that's assuming you can get an eye on the game at all.  Unless you're local to the Philly or southern New Jersey area and/or get Comcast Sportsnet-Philly, I don't think this one will be on TV.  I don't know of anyone is broadcasting this game elsewhere - MSG certainly isn't.  I'm not finding anything outside of the Flyers' site saying "CSN-PH."  WFAN doesn't have it scheduled for radio or streaming, either. I'm not seeing a schedule for tomorrow's broadcasts on WIP 610, the Flyers' radio partner, but they stream audio (I think).  So that's our best shot?  Considering this game will help determine Lemaire's second set of cuts this week, not knowing how to follow, much less see, the game really sucks - for lack of a better phrase.  It's possible the best way for us to follow this game is at Broad Street Hockey.

I apologize for the threadbare preview.  Definitely hit up Gulitti or Chere for news (as you usually should) as they'll have up-to-date information about the roster before the game starts. Maybe even some information how you can follow the game. Check out Broad Street Hockey for their game preview.  If you have some knowledge on how to see/hear this game - legally see/hear this, pirated online streams are not allowed, no questions asked - put it in the comments.  Even if it's just to say, "John, you fool, it's being shown on _____" put it in because I really don't know at this point.  If you have any other thoughts about tonight's game, please enter it in the comments.
