New Jersey Devils vs. New York Islanders - 9/23 Pre-season Game Thread

New, comments

Welcome to our second game thread of the pre-season. I'll have more control over what's going on this time around, so I'll do some updates.

The game is being televised by the Islanders on MSG Plus (HD), with Hockey Hall of Famer Jiggs McDonald and Billy Jaffe on the call. As I stated over at Puck the Media, this thing is going to be pretty Tavares-heavy, as the young man is making his Long Island debut tonight. I suppose we can all use this thread to vent (politely) and see what a non-Ranger pre-season game looks like on TV.

Here are, according to Gulitti, tonight's line combos for the Devils:

Bergfors-Zajac-Langenbrunner

Rolston-Zubrus-Shanahan

Halischuk-Pelley/Sestito-Zharkov

Peters-Pelley/Sestito-Grenier

Oduya-Martin

White-Davison

Leach-Murphy

GOALIES: Danis (2 periods), Frazee

So join me in the comments and enjoy tonight's game. Updates will be posted after the jump.

UPDATE (5:45 PM): From Newsday's Katie Strang, the Isles lines tonight:

Smith-Tavares-Moulson

Tambelinni-Moore-Comeau

Reich-Park-Sim

Marciano-Mauldin-Park

Witt-Martinek

de Haan-Streit

Kohn-McDonald

GOALIES: Biron (starting)

First Period

UPDATE (7:16 PM): After Marc Streit delivers a clean hit to Andrew Peters, Olivier Magnan-Grenier goes after him and fights him, and Streit is game. We don't really agree with a young kid going out and try and impress in camp by taking on a premier (for the Isles) player, but no harm done it seems.

(7:20 PM): Two more sets of fights. Jay Leach and Rob Davison tangle with Micheal Haley and Matt Martin. Billy Jaffe somehow sees this as the Isles going after the Devils best players. He also thinks it's a response by the Devils to an interference with Yann Danis, when it was pretty clear it was in reponse to a hit on Johnny Oduya. Whatever, Billy.

(7:40 PM): You can probably guess that this wasn't a great period from the lack of updates. The Devils on the ice looked like guys that hadn't seen a game in a week, and the Isles didn't look much better. Scoreless after a period.

Second Period

(7:59 PM): Young Tavares looks comfortable. Just put out a great move down the wing and forced it wide. Not much more to say about his game. Seems to be always thinking, skates alright, and seems to have the guts to make a play.

(8:01 PM): Devils getting a Power Play, first one of the game for either team. Jeremy Reich goes off for hooking. Rolston-Zubrus-Shanahan-Oduya-Martin is the first Power Play unit.

(8:03 PM): SCORE! Vladimir Zharkov puts home a Brian Rolston ripper that skitters through Marty Biron. Great shot from Rolston at the point. 2nd unit was Zharkov-Zajac-Halischuk-Rolston-Martin. Rolston and Martin get assists. 1-0 New Jersey.

(8:09 PM): After Matt Martin and Andrew Peters get unsportsmanlike penalties, the ever-reliable Richard Park beats an ill-prepared Danis on a backhand wraparound. 1-1 Tie.

(8:20 PM): Brendan Witt will head to the box for. Devils power play on. They seem to be starting to get their sealegs in the 2nd period.

(8:22 PM): SCORE! Bergfors' attempted shot careems over to Jamie Langenbrunner. A 2nd power play goal. Bergfors and Rolston the assists. Rolston with 2 assists in the game now. 2-1 New Jersey.

(8:25 PM): Another Islander penalty. Blake Comeau is in the chateau bow wow. 3rd power play for NJ, 2-2 so far.

(8:27 PM): The Isles don't look particularly good on defense, but have countered out of the zone alright. Brian Rolston looks like a new human being from the one we saw last season. Devils ulimately come up empty on this man advantage.

(8:30 PM): Wow. Niclas Bergfors. Get. off. the. ice. Bergfors is lucky he didn't get a dive for embellishing that trip he got.

(8:31 PM): And that's the 2nd period. Devils have a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. We'll see you in the 3rd.

Third Period

(8:51 PM): Micheal Haley and Rob Davison go at it again. NOTE: Yann Danis is still in net for NJ. It was supposed to be for only two periods. Sorry, Jeff Frazee.

(8:52 PM): The Devils are shorthanded for the first time as Olivier Magnan-Grenier goes off for tripping.

(8:53 PM): The Islanders connect on the power play at Matt Moulson scores on his own rebound. Tavares will get an assist. 2-2 Tie.

(9:01 PM): Rod Pelley broke down the wing with a decent shot, but Biron made the save. Pelley's been much better than he was last week vs. the Rangers.

(9:06 PM): SCORE! Cory Murphy with the chance to make the team with the long shot that produces a rebound that Olivier Magnan-Grenier rebounds in. Murphy and White the assists as OMG makes it 3-2 New Jersey.

(9:10 PM): Devils to the man advantage for the 4th time. I'm not as angry at the crew as Fischer is, but good lord, enough with the Tavares talk! Brett Westgarth off for holding.

(9:15 PM): Dainius Zubrus saves his fancy moves for the pre-season, folks. made a great toe-drag that he couldn't convert. Later Zajac and Shanahan couldn't convert a 2-on-1.

(9:21 PM): SCORE! The Isles pull Biron for an extra skater, and almost on cue, Niclas Bergfors nails it. 1-1-2 for the young Swedish forward this game, and it's looking more and more likely he'll have a shot to make the team. 4-2 New Jersey.

(9:22 PM): And that's it! The Devils move to 2-0-0 in the pre-season, defeating the Islanders by a score of 4-2. Thanks for joining me. Enjoy Fischer's recap and we'll see you later!
